Nicholas J. Garber received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of London and graduate degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University.

Garber is a University Distinguished Professor at UCF and the Henry L. Kinnier Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia. He was previously a professor of civil engineering at the University of Sierra Leone, where he was also the dean of the faculty of engineering. He also taught at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he played an important role in the development of the graduate program in transportation engineering. He was a visiting professor at the University College London, the University of Canterbury in Christchurch and Monash University in Melbourne.

Garber’s research is in the areas of traffic operations and highway safety. He has been the principal investigator for many federal, state, and agency-sponsored research projects. He is the author of over 150 refereed publications and reports.
