With a background in engineering and science, Ying Xie successfully applies the scientific tools to resolve business and industrial engineering problems in multiple disciplines, including logistics, supply chain management, finance, healthcare, disaster management, sustainability and many more. She specializes in maritime transport, clean energy supply chain, sustainable aviation supply chain and healthcare supply chain. Xie is a board member in the Strategy Advisory Board for Digital Supply Chain Innovation Hub, Digital Catapult. This is a 10-million-euro program funded by UKRI and it draws another 10-million-euro investment from the private sector.

Xie has led and delivered over 20 projects worth more than 20 million euros, funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC), UKRI Innovate, EU Horizon, Health Education England, Connected Places Catapult and industry partners. She serves as an expert reviewer for multiple funding bodies, including UKRI Medical Research Council, British Academy/Leverhulme Trust, LGC Health Research Program, Made Smarter Digital Supply Chain Innovation Hub, Fondazione Cariplo, and National Science Centre. As principal investigator on multiple Innovate UK projects, Xie helps businesses address challenges in operational efficiency, data analytics and decarbonization. She is also co-investigator on EPSRC-funded projects supporting low-carbon transport, leading the Co-Innovation Methodology and Impacts group within the EPSRC UK National Clean Maritime Hub (11.7 million euros) and overseeing academic and research activities in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Net Zero Aviation (8.1 million euros).
