Biography

Soheil Sabri is an urban planner and geospatial scientist focused on advancing urban development through research, practical work, and education. His main interests include urban digital twins, multi-dimensional planning support systems, and analytical tools that provide data-driven insights for urban planning.

Sabri leads pioneering research in urban digital twins, covering areas like development envelope control, rule-based compliance assessment, and environmentally sustainable design. He significantly influences digital urban planning through his roles in various professional organizations, including co-chairing the Academia and Research Working Group within the Digital Twin Consortium and contributing to the Planning Institute of Australia’s PlanTech National Working Group, Geoscience Australia’s Spatial Digital Twin Working Group, and the Smart Cities Council’s Digital Twin Task Force.

Previously, Dr. Sabri was a senior research fellow at the Centre for Spatial Data Infrastructure and Land Administration at The University of Melbourne (2014-2023) and a senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2012-2014). He collaborated on numerous consultancy and research projects with governments and industries worldwide, focusing on digital modernization of land and spatial planning, urban analytics, affordable housing, transportation planning, and assessing built environments’ impact on public health and welfare.

Sabri holds a doctoral degree and completed two post-doctoral fellowships in geosimulation, urban analytics data infrastructure, and 3D geospatial techniques for landscape design. He developed a modular system architecture for digital twins, integrating 2D, 3D, and 4D data for built and natural environments and socio-economic systems, supporting analytics, visualization, predictive modeling and simulations. He also mentors researchers interested in IoT, AI, and deep learning for ESD and urban quality of life.

As the director of the Urban Digital Twin Lab at SMST, Sabri oversees projects in 3D urban analytics, geodesign for climate adaptation, and human-environment interaction modeling and simulation, driving innovation in urban planning and geospatial science.
