Biography

Chase Brown is a materials engineer and neuroscientist who develops tools across the fields of nanomaterials, photonics, bioinformatics, machine learning and artificial intelligence to facilitate the automation of scientific discovery. He has a master's degree in chemical and biological materials engineering from the University of Oklahoma and a doctorate in neuroscience from the OU Health Sciences Center in partnership with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Brown also has extensive industrial experience from managing carbon nanotube production, separation and characterization operations as the lead research and development engineer at SouthWest Nanotechnologies.

His research at these institutions concentrated on optoelectronic and physicochemical properties of nanomaterials, the design of stimuli-responsive nanoparticles for biofuel catalysis, and application of algebraic topology to genomic meta-analyses and literature-based discovery.

His lab at UCF has several main drives: language modeling and meta-analysis for nanotheranostic predictions and drug discovery; explainable AI via extraction of analytical expressions from physicochemical and biological data; reinforcement learning guided wet-lab automation; and ab initio property prediction.  These different areas of research allow a multi-disciplinary approach in his lab, cablab, that brings together fields of nanomaterials, computational modeling, spectral theory, photophysics, excitonics, neuroscience, ML/AI, natural language processing, topology, genomics, meta-analysis, quantum physics, symbolic regression and nanotheranostics.
