Kelly Kibler, PI
My research targets coupled biological and physical variables in river and estuarine systems. I am particularly interested in flow and sediment interaction and their influence to aquatic organisms at multiple scales. I study both natural hydrologic phenomena as well as waterways that are modified for human benefit; for instance by, dams, dredging, levies and hardened structures. Applications for my research include development pathways and infrastructure that minimize ecosystem disruption and promote preservation or restoration of aquatic ecosystem services.
Andrea Juarez-Lucas, PhD Candidate

Andrea lives in Japan, where she works with the UNESCO International Centre for Water Hazard & Risk Management. Her research examines the role of coping capacity as an effective strategy to manage flood risk while supporting socio-ecological benefits from flood-prone lands. Andrea’s work is truly interdisciplinary- blending hydrologic and hydraulic modeling with field data collection on social coping capacity and inland fisheries. She works mainly in flood-prone communities of Candaba municipality in the Philippines. Other research interests include evaluation of governance and institutional change for adaptive water management.
In her spare time, Andrea enjoys traveling, backpacking, yoga and photography.
Mohammadhossein Alipour (Ali)
PhD student
Ali holds a M.A.Sc. degree from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) in Hydrotechnical Engineering and a M.Sc. degree from Sharif University of Technology (Tehran) in Water Resources Engineering. He has experience working with water and hydropower companies such as BC Hydro and Power Authority in Canada and Abgeer Consulting Engineers in Iran. Ali’s research interests include ecohydraulics, hydrology, and water resources planning and management.
Tonmoy Sarker
PhD Student
Tonmoy holds a MSc degree from UNESCO-IHE Institute of Water Education in Water Science and Engineering with specialization in Hydro Bioinformatic and Flood Risk Management. He also has a Bachelors degree in Water Resources Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) . Tonmoy has experience specializing in hydrology, disaster and climate risk management in different national and regional organizations in South and Central Asia. His key research areas of interest are ecohydraulics, flood risk management, and dam and reservoir engineering.
Nyle Rice
MSc Student
Nyle is pursuing a Masters in Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering at the University of Central Florida. He graduated in August of 2016 from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering and has completed several internships in the field of environmental engineering and water resources: including at JEA – Water Engineering and Construction and City of Orlando’s Wastewater Division.
David Zheng
BSc Student
David is pursuing his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering at the University of Central Florida. His research interests include coastal hydraulics, water resource sustainability, wave energy, desalination, shoreline restoration. In addition to supporting the lab, David is also an intern for Orange County Utilities, in the Water Division.
