Description

The blade body data file defines the inertial properties of a rigid turbine blade. Rigid blades are modeled using a series of aerodynamic elements exerting forces and torques on a single body with lumped properties. The lumped properties are described below.

Parameters

Name Description Value Unit
m Blade mass. Real scalar [kg]
S_blade Blade spanwise length. Real scalar [m]
blade_cm Distance to the blade center of mass along the spanwise direction. Real scalar [m]
I_xx (x,x) component of the inertia tensor about the blade’s center of mass. Real scalar [kg.m²]
I_yy (y,y) component of the inertia tensor about the blade’s center of mass. Real scalar [kg.m²]
I_zz (z,z) component of the inertia tensor about the blade’s center of mass. Real scalar [kg.m²]
I_xy (x,y) component of the inertia tensor about the blade’s center of mass. Real scalar [kg.m²]
I_xz (x,z) component of the inertia tensor about the blade’s center of mass. Real scalar [kg.m²]
I_yz (y,z) component of the inertia tensor about the blade’s center of mass. Real scalar [kg.m²]

Notes

The blade body data is stored in a .txt file that can easily be produced using the Data Generation Tool or by populating a .txt file manually. If the file is created manually, parameters must be defined in the format name = value;, where name is the parameter name and value is a number of type Real. Comments can be inserted in the file using double slash: //. See below for an example.

The diagram shows a turbine blade with the body-fixed coordinates defined at its root. The z-axis extends from the root in the direction of the blade span. For an unpitched blade, the x-axis points in the downwind direction and the y-axis lies in the rotational plane. The blade span is input parameter S_blade and the spanwise distance to the center of mass is blade_cm.
