The P.E.G.A.S.U.S. (Pilot Enhanced Guidance and Augmented Sight Utility System) project aims to develop a portable heads-up display (HUD) designed for personal aircraft. Current aviation HUD systems are typically integrated into aircraft during manufacturing and can cost tens of thousands of dollars, making them inaccessible for many general aviation pilots. This project seeks to provide an affordable and portable alternative that improves pilot situational awareness by presenting critical flight information directly within the pilot’s field of view. The system collects real-time flight data using onboard sensors including an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a barometric altimeter to determine parameters such as pitch, roll, heading, and altitude. An ESP32 microcontroller processes sensor data and transmits it to a Raspberry Pi–based display system that renders a graphical HUD interface. Optical components project the interface onto a semi-transparent combiner, allowing pilots to view flight data while maintaining visibility of the external environment. By reducing the need for pilots to divert attention to traditional cockpit instruments, the system has the potential to improve situational awareness and safety while making HUD technology more accessible to the general aviation community.
