NepTune: Polyphonic Hybrid Musical Synthesizer

Music is an integral part of society and has been instrumental in increasing the quality of life for people throughout history. The evolution of technology has changed how many approach this art, with the transition from analog to digital systems opening new doorways for creative expression. Our team, inspired by the greatest examples from both paradigms, has set out to create our own fusion of the two. NepTune is a hybrid musical synthesizer for the hands-on artist and tinkerer. A synthesizer creates sound from scratch. NepTune’s sound engine utilizes high-precision digital oscillators, which are then shaped by an analog signal path. This analog section uses classic components, including a resonant voltage-controlled filter for tonal character and a voltage-controlled amplifier sculpted by envelope generators to give each note its unique contour. We designed NepTune to encourage sonic exploration. Unlike modern instruments that often bury features within confusing digital menus, NepTune features a knob-per-function interface and is conveniently controlled via any MIDI device. This design provides hands-on control over every parameter, fostering a deeper understanding of sound synthesis. Our goal is to empower artists to experiment and discover new sounds intuitively, creating an engaging connection between their ideas and the instrument itself.
