Our project is intended to fix a problem affecting electronics hoarders with many devices used infrequently or semi-frequently. If a device is left charging or unplugged for a long period of time, the battery can degrade quickly. We are making a multi-port USB device charger that can turn off well before a full charge, preserving battery life. This works because as a device charges, the charging current will start to drop. Once the current drops below a user-set threshold, the charger turns off the port. After a user-set time delay, the device begins charging again. Smart device chargers do exist, but they do not offer the ability to configure multiple ports while adjusting current thresholds. While this is a fairly niche use case, the technology behind this can be applied to charging many battery-powered devices plugged in for long periods of time, such as school laptop or tablet carts. The end goal is to lengthen the service life of lithium-ion batteries by optimizing charging for battery health.Team
