Language learning is difficult, especially under time constraints. Our project provides professors a supplementary resource to provide students practice for conversations and the learning of new vocabulary and phrases. Tito is a chatbot, which uses a user's vocabulary proficiency to determine their response on how to lead the conversation. Tito provides the user the ability to communicate via their voice and/or keyboard. Currently the all of the application is hosted locally on the UCF’s CDHR’s server, therefore information isn’t being collected and used by other 3rd parties. Professors here have the ability to provide extra instructions to Tito on how to approach any or certain lessons. The closest competitors is Duolingo. Duolingo MAX requires a subscription and is mobile only, and uses ChatGPT in the background. As of now, there are terms/phrases in lessons which are parsed (taking conjugations into consideration and some misspellings) which then updates a user’s proficiency of those terms/phrases based on usage. Our project is one of many within the ELLE ecosystem and we hope to make some of our tools accessible to other projects, providing more functionality to current and future implementations.Team
