Dr. Marion Bartsch
Marion Bartsch is scientist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and professor at the Ruhr-University Bochum. She holds a doctoral degree in material science from the Technical University of Darmstadt and a diploma degree in mechanical engineering from the University Duisburg-Essen. She is working in the DLR-Institute of Materials research since 1996 on development, characterization and simulation of high-performance materials for aerospace applications. With her research team she has a strong collaboration with Dr. Seetha Raghavan starting 10 years ago with focus on characterization of ceramic thermal barrier coatings, nickel base super alloys, and ceramic matrix composites. Highlights of this collaboration are in-situ characterization experiments with simultaneous mechanical testing at temperatures up to 1000 °C with the strong support by the team of Jonathan Almer at the Synchrotron facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Students from the IRES program have been involved in this research from the start of the first IRES program in 2015.
