2020 Faculty News: Awards and Honors

November 12, 2020 —Mubarak Shah, professor, and computer science graduate student Yun Zhai received an ACM SIGMM Test of Time Paper Honorable Mention award for their paper “Visual attention detection in video sequences using spatiotemporal cues.”

October 23, 2020 — Sudipta Seal, chair of the UCF Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was named a 2020 Health Innovator by the South Florida Business Journal.

September 29, 2020 — Mohamed Abdel-Aty, chair of the UCF Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering, has been selected as the recipient of the 2020 Roy W. Crum Award by the Transportation Research Board.

September 23, 2020 — Zhishan Guo, assistant professor, received the best paper award at EMSOFT 2020 for “Efficient Feasibility Analysis for Graph-based Real-Time Task Systems.”

June 11, 2020 — Sudipta Seal, chair of the UCF Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Ceramic Society.

May 5, 2020 — Hassan Foroosh and Pamela Wisniewski received UCF’s Teaching Incentive Program (TIP) and Research Incentive Award (RIA) awards.

April 21, 2020 — Mubarak Shah was named an AI 2020 most influential scholar for his “outstanding technical achievements with lasting contribution and impact.” This recognizes Dr. Shah as being one of the top 10 most-cited scholars in the top venues for computer vision.

March 27, 2020 — Dazhong Wu, assistant professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, received the 2019 Best Paper Award from the Journal of Manufacturing Systems.

March 26, 2020 — Pamela Wisniewski, assistant professor, Department of Computer Science, has received UCF’s Spring 2020 Marchioli Collective Impact Award for her idea to create the university’s industry-focused iUX Academy.

March 16, 2020 — Subith Vasu, associate professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has received the Combustion Institute Research Excellence Award.

February 27, 2020 — Seven CECS faculty members were awarded the prestigious NSF CAREER Award:

• Andrew Dickerson, assistant professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering;
• Paul Gazzillo, assistant professor, Department of Computer Science;
• Ranajay Ghosh, assistant professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering;
• Helen Huang, assistant professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering;
• Kelly Kibler, assistant professor, Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering;
• Akihiro Kushima, assistant professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering; and
• Junjian Qi, assistant professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

February 24, 2020 — Charles Hughes, Pegasus Professor of computer science, will be inducted into the National Center for Simulation Hall of Fame.

January 9, 2020 — Pamela Wisniewski, assistant professor of computer science, was named a senior member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM).

January 9, 2020 — Carolina Cruz-Neira, Agere Chair in the UCF Department of Computer Science, was named a fellow of the IEEE for contributions to virtual reality. This prestigious honor is limited to at most 1% of the total IEEE voting members.
