Endowed Scholarships Aid Creation of Future Leaders Miller
Sellen Conner & Walsh, one of Florida's most respected community planning
and civil engineering firms, has created an endowed scholarship at the
University of Central Florida's College of Engineering and Computer Science.
The scholarship will annually aid undergraduate students studying in the
fields of civil engineering, environmental engineering or stormwater management.
The endowment - created by a $15,000 donation from MSCW - will be used
to support an outstanding engineering student each year. The Society for Information Management (SIM) Central Florida Chapter has made a gift of $25,000 to endow scholarships to support Information Technology and Computer Science students at the College. The endowment will be awarded annually to pay for tuition, textbooks or fees in that order. The SIM members raised the $25,000 endowment over the last 4 years. According to SIM President Rick Sickles, "We hope this is a start to an endowment that will grow for our UCF Information Technology and Computer Science Students graduates who will lead us in the future,” said Rick Sickles, SIM president. "One of our goals in SIM is to help create the next generation of IT leaders. This SIM UCF scholarship helps accomplish our goal." |

Young Women on to Engineering & Computer Science
Expanding Your Horizons attendees in the Harris Corporation Partnership Atrium in Eng. II
More than 200 4th to 9th
grade young women from around the state attended the "Expanding
Your Horizons" conference at the College. The conference goals were
to increase an interest in engineering, sciences and mathematics by providing
fun hands-on learning experiences, fostering awareness of career opportunities,
and providing students with an opportunity to meet and form personal contacts
with positive women role models. |

and Environmental Dr. Necati Catbas has attended the Fourth International Workshop on Structural Control held at Columbia University and has presented a paper entitled "Challenges in Structural Health Monitoring." His co-authors are Dr. Mubarak Shah, Computer Science, and graduate students Jason Burkett, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Arslan Basharat, Computer Science. Dr. David Cooper has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the International Air & Waste Management Association, the premier professional organization for those involved in the fields of air pollution control, air quality monitoring, air quality modeling, and solid and/or hazardous waste management. Dr. Scott Hagen, Associate Professor and Director of the Water Resources Simulations Laboratory, organized and chaired a session on Coastal Hydrodynamics and Water Quality at the 6th International Conference on Hydro-Science and Engineering in Brisbane, Australia. Dr. Hagen will present his research on storm tide modeling and simulations to Federal Highway Administration National Hydraulic Engineering Conference in Asheville, North Carolina this fall. Dr. Debra Reinhart has received the 2003 Florida Engineering Society Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement. Dr. Jim Taylor (principal investigator), Dr. John D. Dietz and Dr. Andrew A. Randall will be Co-PIs on a recently awarded $1.6 million project to evaluate control opportunities for distribution system water quality in a changing water quality environment using inhibitors. Tampa Bay Water (TBW), and its member governments of Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco Counties and the Cities of New Port Richey, St. Petersburg, and Tampa, are the participating utilities in this project. Dr. Gour Yeh has presented two papers and chaired a session on numerical methods at the 6th International Conference on HYDROINDORMATICS. Dr. Roger Wayson has been awarded the the status of Fellow member by the National Air and Waste Management Association. The honor has been bestowed upon Dr. Wayson based on this professional accomplishments and attainments in air quality control. |

What a Knight
to Remember!
What a "Diverse", "Talented" and "Dedicated" set of students in the College of Engineering & Computer Science. This spring the Society of Women Engineers hosted the 1st ever multicultural fashion show, ethnic food celebration, cultural dancing and "Ancient engineering" presentation!
Battle of
the Bands
Bands performing in front of ENGR II
The College has held its First Annual Battle of the Engineering and Computer Science Bands. Really! Six bands performed a forty minute set of mostly original music. Every band participating contained at least one engineering or computer science major from various departments of the College. A goal of the event was to promote the creative engineer. More than 350 students, faculty and staff attended. Free food was provided thanks to event sponsors the Dean's Student Advisory Council and the Mechanical Engineering Honor Society (Pi Tau Sigma).
Civil & Environmental
Engineering The Civil and Environmental
Engineering student design team has taken first prize at the Florida
Water Environmental Association beating two University of Florida
teams, FAU, and the University of Miami. Student members, Jeff Flairty,
Boyd Jenkins, Jesus Garcia, Susan Ehring, and Teri Carson have earned
a chance to go to nationals in New Orleans in October.

Science goes to mechanical engineering major Barry M. Kudrowitz. As an
undergraduate student, Barry earned a cumulative 4.0 GPA. He will be pursuing
his doctorate in mechanical engineering this fall. Barry served as president
of Pi Tau Sigma, the mechanical engineering honors society. He is the
recipient of the "Order of Pegasus of 2004", UCF's highest student award.
In his "spare time" he organized Battle of the Bands. Industrial Engineering
& Management Systems Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering Mechanical, Materials &
Aerospace student Dr. Wendy Li, a graduate from Dr. Seal's group will
be starting her prestigious National Research Council post doctoral Fellowship
at NASA. Mechanical, Materials &
Aerospace/Advanced
Materials Processing and Analysis Center (AMPAC) Ph. D. student Jing
Liu, has been awarded the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship.
This Fellowship has been internationally over 53 countries since 1938.
Along with the prestige, Jing will receive a stipend support for $6,000
per year. Mr. Balaji Jayaraj, a Mechanical,
Materials & Aerospace AMPAC graduate student is the proud recipient of
the UCF's "Most Outstanding Thesis." His thesis is entitled "Non-Destructive
Evaluation of Thermal Barrier Coatings using Electrochemical Impedance
Spectroscopy." Dr's. Yongho Sohn and Vimal H. Desai served as advisers.
Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering/AMPAC undergraduate student Andrew Warren won first prize for his poster "Electron Microscopy of Melt Spun Ribbon" at the America Vacuum Society-FSM 2004 Joint Symposium in Orlando. Engineering/AMPAC student Ravi Todi won first prize Student Poster for "Investigations of SiCN Thin Films" at the 205th International Conference of the Electrochemical Society in San Antonio, Texas.
