Dean Selection On Track
by: Wayne Weinberg

Significant progress is being made in the selection of the next dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Thirty-six people have applied for the position. The search committee has completed six telephone interviews. They plan to conduct candidate interviews on campus in late January or early February. According to search committee chair Tom Keon, Dean of the College of Business Administration, “we hope to have the entire search completed by the end of March.” The committee will select a candidate who has a very strong academic background; leadership experience at a major Ph.D granting college; ability to build relationships within the university and with business, industry and alumni; and is a fund raiser.

Name Change and National Searches
by: Wayne Weinberg

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has been divided into the School of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. This allows both units to report directly to the Dean and have representation in the chairs council. A national search is underway for both the Director of the School of Computer Science and the Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Construction to Start Engineering III
by: Wayne Weinberg

Rendering of Engineering III

Bids have been opened for the construction of the Colleges new building Engineering III. The four story 100,000 square foot building will be the home of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and School of Computer Science.

Engineering III will provide specialized classrooms, 30 research labs for faculty and graduate students, two specialized research caves for virtual and augmented reality, an auditorium, and offices for faculty and staff. There will also be dedicated areas for advising and registering students. In planning, the building is designed to be attractive for university-industry interaction research partnerships with the community.

Construction is scheduled to start in very early 2004 and be finished by mid 2005. Engineering III will be located between CREOL and Engineering I.

Minority Engineering & Computer Science Programs Hosts Teacher’s Workshop
by: Temitayo Akinrenfon

Minority Engineering & Computer Science Programs Office hosted its annual SECME teacher’s in-service workshop. SECME’s goal is to increase the pool of historically under-represented, and under-served students to help create a diverse and globally competitive workforce. The Minority Engineering & Computer Science Programs Office supports them in this goal.

Interim Dean Louis Chow launched the workshop with a rousing welcome. An interactive presentation followed from Lockheed Martin Enterprise Information Systems on advancing technology in the classroom. There were also workshops from NASA and SECME, INC. Industrial engineer associate professor Dr. Pamela McCauley-Bell delivered the keynote speech "Winners Don't Quit!" The day ended with last-minute touches on SECME’s regional competition in February. This year, the competition will kick-off National Engineers Week - the theme is “SECME: The Global Road Map to Success.” If you are interested in speaking to, performing lab demonstrations for or interacting with high-school and middle-school students, please contact Temitayo Akinrefon at 407-823-3466.

Hosni Represents the US in Japan

Dr. Yasser A. Hosni, professor Industrial Engineering and Management Systems, was a panelist representing the US in the International Symposium on Management of Technology. Dr. Hosni, the VP of the International Association of Management of Technology (IAMOT) was invited to talk about the "Role of Academic Societies in Industry-University Cooperation and the Future of such Activities in the US". Japan is hosting a number of regional and international gatherings as part of a massive effort to re-vitalize its economy through technology and innovation. About 300 academicians and practitioners attended the symposium aimed at building and/or re-educating managers in management of technology (MOT). Internet Economy: Opportunities and Challenges for Developed and Developing Regions of the World, published by Elsevier Ltd. is a compilation of papers presented at the IAMOT 2002 conference authored by Dr. Hosni.

Computer Science Team Continues to Dominate

UCF computer science programming team will advance to the world championship round to be held in Prague in March after dominating the annual Southeast Regional Programming contest. Held at Emory Riddle University in Daytona Beach, our teams placed 1st, 3rd, 6th, 11th and 34th among 84 teams from 5 states. This is the 22nd year the computer science team has finished in the top three. No other university or college has done that. Also unprecedented is that UCF has won this contest as many times as the remaining 84 teams combined. Good luck to Casey Thurston, Raymond Ho and Scott Vogelpohl. Computer science associate professor Dr. Ali Orooji coached the teams.

Safety on the Streets

Fathy Abdalla presented his Ph.D reseach at the Florida Institute of Transportation Engineers (FSITE) meeting. The theme of the meeting was "Safety, Reliability & Security of our Transportation System". His work deals with how Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) as well as other factors impact route choice in the transportation network. This has significant implications on the highway/street network performance. He developed new modeling methodology of route choice under ATIS. He received the second place for this presentation representing UCF. So far Abdalla and his adviser, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Aty, professor CEE have published 3 journals and 2 conference papers out of his Ph.D research. They will be presenting some of this work this month at the Transportation Research Board annual meeting in Washington DC.

SWE Student Chapter Attend National Conference

A delegation of UCF women engineering and computer science students attended the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) National Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. Over 3,000 female students/professionals representing engineering and the sciences were in attendance. This annual conference entitled "Supporting the World Through Engineering" focused on aspects of engineering that improve the quality of life. Programs throughout the event highlighted engineering's contributions to education, the environment and business enterprise. There were opportunities to network; attend personal development classes; participate in career development workshops and SWE meetings; interview at the career fair which hosted over 85 corporations; listen to professional women and discuss ways to attract and retain women in the engineering fields.

It is In Giving....
by: Terrell Hodges

Every year the College of Engineering and Computer Science staff associates select a charitable organization. This year's fundraisers include: (1) Bake sales for the Orlando Sentinel Family Fund Holiday Campaign, which raised $270.83 (2) "Adopt an Angel/Adopt a Child" program from the Charlee's Angels organization. Staff members "adopted" a child and purchased gifts for them from their wish list. More than 25 children came to the Harris Corporation Partnership Atrium to join the staff for cookies, juice and to open their gifts. (3) Staff associates donated canned goods to Destiny Community Assistance Center at their Annual Staff Appreciation Party.

Thank you CECS staff associates for your goodwill and service to the community.
