FACULTY KUDOS Hosni
Represents the US in Japan Dr.
Sury Citings Dr. "Sury" Suryanarayana, associate professor Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) was honored by President Hitt for his contributions in material science research, his record number of citations (over 2100) recognized by ISI, and his recent appointment as Chairman to the Nanotechnology Task Force in American Society for Materials (ASM). |
Visit from the Top The Chairman & CEO of Melbourne based Harris Corporation Howard Lance and Harris' VP Human Resources and Corporate Relations Nick Heldreth visited with Interim Dean Dr. Louis Chow. They toured Engineering II's Harris Corporation Computer Laboratory and Harris Corporation Partnership Atrium. Since the 4,500 square foot lab opened 28 months ago, nearly one million engineering and computer science students have logged on-more than the population of Orange County. More than one million have walked through the 11,200 square foot Atrium since it opened 28 months ago.

National
Champions A Civil and
Environmental Engineering student team has captured the national environmental
design competition at the Water Environment
Federation meeting in Los Angeles. The winning design was entitled
“Biosolids Treatment and Disposal Alternatives for Altamonte Springs,
Florida.” Marie Romah, Michelle Hanson, Brenda Keenan, and Mimi Perez-Falcon
represented the College after winning the state competition and beating
the University of Florida. Civil and Environmental Interim Department
Chair Dr. Debra Reinhart
coached the team.
Computer Science Team Continues to Dominate UCF computer science programming team will advance to the world championship round to be held in Prague in March after dominating the annual Southeast Regional Programming contest. Held at Emory Riddle University in Daytona Beach, our teams placed 1st, 3rd, 6th, 11th and 34th among 84 teams from 5 states. This is the 22nd year the computer science team has finished in the top three. No other university or college has done that. Also unprecedented is that UCF has won this contest as many times as the remaining 84 teams combined. Good luck to Casey Thurston, Raymond Ho and Scott Vogelpohl. Computer science associate professor Dr. Ali Orooji coached the teams.
Computer Science Finalist Among the Best Ankur Datta is one of the finalists for the 2004 Outstanding Undergraduate Award sponsored by Computing Research Association. This award program recognizes students who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research nationwide. Other finalists were from Princeton University, University of Rochester, Columbia University, Brown University, UC San Diego. Thuc Vu/Carnegie Mellon University is the 2004 Male Awardee.
Yuan Liu, electrical engineering Ph.D. candidate will present his paper (Blind Source Separation for Frequency Dependent Channels) at the 46th IEEE International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems in Cairo, Egypt. His paper, is among the ten finalist that will be presented and published by the conference. Dr. Wasfy Mikhael is Liu's advisor. Good Luck Yuan! |
UCF
Team in "Jeopardy"
Fathy Abdalla presented his Ph.D reseach at the Florida Institute of Transportation Engineers (FSITE) meeting. The theme of the meeting was "Safety, Reliability & Security of our Transportation System". His work deals with how Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) as well as other factors impact route choice in the transportation network. This has significant implications on the highway/street network performance. He developed new modeling methodology of route choice under ATIS. He received the second place for this presentation representing UCF. So far Abdalla and his adviser, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Aty, professor CEE have published 3 journals and 2 conference papers out of his Ph.D research. They will be presenting some of this work this month at the Transportation Research Board annual meeting in Washington DC. SWE Student Chapter Attend National Conference A delegation of UCF women engineering and computer science students attended the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) National Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. Over 3,000 female students/professionals representing engineering and the sciences were in attendance. This annual conference entitled "Supporting the World Through Engineering" focused on aspects of engineering that improve the quality of life. Programs throughout the event highlighted engineering's contributions to education, the environment and business enterprise. There were opportunities to network; attend personal development classes; participate in career development workshops and SWE meetings; interview at the career fair which hosted over 85 corporations; listen to professional women and discuss ways to attract and retain women in the engineering fields. It
is In Giving.... Every year the College of Engineering and Computer Science staff associates select a charitable organization. This year's fundraisers include: (1) Bake sales for the Orlando Sentinel Family Fund Holiday Campaign, which raised $270.83 (2) "Adopt an Angel/Adopt a Child" program from the Charlee's Angels organization. Staff members "adopted" a child and purchased gifts for them from their wish list. More than 25 children came to the Harris Corporation Partnership Atrium to join the staff for cookies, juice and to open their gifts. (3) Staff associates donated canned goods to Destiny Community Assistance Center at their Annual Staff Appreciation Party. Thank you CECS staff associates for your goodwill and service to the community. |
