A day after seven astronauts were lost in the Columbia disaster, the first American woman in space encouraged young girls gathered at the University of Central Florida to continue to "reach for the stars." Sally Ride addressed more than 800 students and adults at the Sally Ride Science Festival, part of a national effort to inspire fifth- through eighth-grade girls to study math and science throughout their education.

Beautiful Minds

by: Marie Aguilar

Initiated and developed by the Central Florida Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society (FES) 14 years ago, PROJECT CREATE, acronym for Creative Responses from Elementary Age ThinkErs is designed to help the students better understand the creative thinking and problem solving process in a non-competitive environment. Creative thinking and problem solving is introduced to the students via a challenge that the entire class works together on to select a solution or solutions to a given project. This year's project is designing a memorial park. Projects from past expos include mining town, space colony, undersea colony and Olympic challenge.

Millenium Park

Other highlights include the "egg-drop" where the students design a egg-contraption that would protect the egg from breaking when thrown off of 3 flights of stairs and the longest flying airplane design contest.

Down it goes.

FES Student volunteer checks to see if egg is intact.
