Dr. Bai is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of UCF. He joined UCF in 2011. He was a mechanical engineer at GE Global Research Center from 2008 to 2010. He teaches the following courses at the UCF MAE department.

Researcher and Scholars



Dr. Fuzuli Agri Akcay
Fuzuli Akçay is a researcher at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from ITU, and Master’s and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, all of them in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. His research focuses on ductile and brittle fracture of metallic materials, and 3D printed micro lattice structures. Dr. Akcay is now an Assistant Professor at ITU, and continue collaborations with the lab.


Graduate Students



Yeting Sun, PhD student
Yeting joined the lab when she is an undergraduate student in Mechanical Engineering at UCF. Now she is second year PhD student. Her research will be focused on mechanics of 3D printed lightweight alloys and micro lattice structures. She likes to watch movies in her spare time.

Sami Musalli, PhD student
Sami is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering from Saudi Arabia. He joined the lab in Fall 2018. He got B.S degree in Mechanical Engineering from King Abdul-Aziz University in 2010.  He worked for one year for Innovators Consulting Engineers and one year for Flour Consulting Engineer, then moved to University of Jeddah in 2012.  After that, he traveled to USA and got his Mater degree in Mechanical Engineering from George Washington University on May, 2018.  Sami’s research focuses on plasticity and fracture of 3D Printed alloys.  In  spare time, he likes to travel, fishing, soccer and watch movies.


Gustavo Peres, PhD student
Gustavo joined the job in fall 2022. He received his mechanical engineering bachelor’s degrees from University of Passo Fundo and master’s degrees from the University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. He is currently the Chief Engineer of Embraer Engineering and Technology Center, USA.

Tuan Tran, PhD student
Tuan works at TeamJAS, Inc. as an airworthiness engineer and is a first-year Ph.D. student at UCF. He got his B.S. and M.S. degrees from UNF (University of North Florida) in 2017 and 2019.

Hans Marius, MS student
Hans Marius obtained his BS in Mechanical Engineering from UCF in 2017. Now he is a student in the online master’s in science a mechanical engineering and projected to graduate in Spring 2023. He works as Senior Facilities/Process engineer at Cook Medical Inc. in Bloomington, IN.

Thai Hua, HUT, B.S. student
Thai is an undergraduate student majoring in mechanical engineering. He does research on developing an assistive device for knee arthroscopy with braking mechanism. His hobbies include watching soccer, tennis, and F1.


Christopher Quach, HUT, B.S. student
Chris is an undergraduate student majoring in mechanical engineering. He does research on organ simulant using granular jamming for training purposes. His hobbies include watching sports like basketball and football. He also enjoys building keyboards and computers.

Professor Aiguo Chen

Dr. Aiguo Chen was a visiting scholar in Mechanical Engineering (from Aug. 2017 to Aug. 2018) and worked on plasticity and ductile fracture of mental. His major is structural engineering. He is also interested in stability and seismic behavior of steel structures. He got his Phd in Structural Engineering from Xi’an University of Architecture & technology in 2003. And He is working at Beijing Jiaotong University. Aiguo Chen enjoys playing Pin Pang and movies in his spare time.

Mohammed Algarni
, PhD 2017. Faculty at King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia.

Mohammed Algarni was an international student from Saudi Arabia. He got his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in 2006. He worked for a petrochemical company for four years as an Inspection Engineer. After that, he traveled to the USA to pursue his graduate studies at UCF. In Dr. Bai’s lab, he started his research on Nickel-base super alloy’s plasticity and damage under multi-axial stresses for different loading conditions. In his spare time, he likes to read novels and watch documentary movies.

Yangyang Qiao
, PhD 2018, working in Apple, California

Yangyang Qiao was a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering and mainly worked on Polymer Matrix Composites (PMC). Composites plasticity and failure modes were his main research interests. He was also interested in composites interphase in control of failure modes. He graduated with a Bachelor degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Hohai University and got his Master degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Central Florida in Spring 2015. Yangyang enjoys playing badminton and movies in his spare time.

Sami Ghazali

Sami Ghazali was a PhD student. His research was focused on void nucleation and growth under different loading conditions for steel 4340. He got his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from California State University in 2011, and his Master’s degree from the University of Central Florida in 2013. In his spare time, he loves biking, swimming and watching movies.

Hao Pan
, PhD 2020

Hao Pan graduated with PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2020. His research in LSSM lab mainly focuses on plasticity and fracture of aluminum alloy and advanced high strength steel (AHSS) sheets. He got his B.S. degree from Shandong University in 2010 and his M.S. degree in Masdar Institute in 2012, both in Materials Science and Engineering. Hao enjoys outdoor activities in his spare time. Hao is working in California.


Xu He, PhD 2020
Xu is a visiting Ph.D student in mechanical engineering (from Nov. 2017 to Nov. 2019) from the Southwest Jiaotong University. He passed PhD defense in 2020. His current research was focused on brittle and ductility fracture of metal matrix composites under different loading conditions. He got his BS degree from Southwest Jiaotong University in 2012. He likes outdoor activities in his spare time. Dr. He works in China.

Shutao graduated from the lab in 2020.. He got his B.S. degree from Dalian University of Technology in 2015. He is interested in fracture of materials. He enjoys watching movies and playing table tennis at his spare time. He works as mechanical engineer at Tesla in California.

Qiang is graduated with PhD from the lab in 2021. He got his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeast Agriculture University in 2004 and got his M.S degree in Mechanics from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2007. He worked in UTC CCS in Shanghai as a FEA, vibration and noise engineer before joining in Dr. Bai’s lab. He is interested in fracture of materials. He likes hiking and jogging at his spare time. Qiang works in a startup company in China.
