UHF Satellite Communications

Project Description

This project is to build the UHF propagation model calculation of signal attenuation through foliage for the next generation, space-based advanced narrow-band UHF communications system.

The empirical UHF propagation model and global forest classification database are developed. One example of current UHF propagation model for Mixed and broadleaf Forest (Deciduous) is presented Fig. 1. UHF foliage attenuation model is being formulated to provide prediction of attenuation as a function of season, antenna polarization, and look angles from zenith (90°) to an elevation angle of 10° from the horizontal. We will include provisions for future higher frequency attenuation data sets into the model.

The global forest classification database (Fig. 2) has resolution of 0.125 x 0.125 deg between N65 and S65 latitude. The database also contains urban binary information. Graphic user interface (GUI) using UHF propagation model and global database is showing Fig. 3. It has been developed to help to check the information.
