Introduction
The University of Central Florida prides itself on being America’s Partnership University®. At UCF, this means joining with others in government, business, and philanthropy to do great things that no one advocate or party could accomplish alone.
In the College of Engineering and Computer Science it means growing existing partnerships and establishing new ones by reinforcing our commitment to address the key needs of Industry and Government. This Partnership Playbook has been created to help existing and potential partners better engage CECS across the spectrum of capabilities and opportunities it offers. It is intended for use both by UCF and partners to:
- Learn and Inform – Learn partner issues, goals and needs. Inform partners of the breadth and depth of CECS capabilities and the spectrum of partnership engagements that are available
- Guide partners through the process, connecting them to the right resources, providing step-by-step guidance and supporting the creation of a holistic strategy and game plan with UCF
- Facilitate and streamline interactions by leveraging proven processes and best practices
- Manage the partnership to ensure maximum impact and return
*Use of the word “partner” or “partnership” in this Playbook is respectively synonymous with “collaborator” or “collaboration” and is NOT intended to suggest and must not be interpreted as referring to a legal partnership or an opportunity for a legal partnership with UCF, as such terms are defined in Section 620 of the Florida Statutes.
Why UCF?
Nationally, UCF currently has the largest single campus location and is the second largest university overall. Its educational, research, and community focus has transformed Central Florida and its impact is now being felt globally in increasing measure. A snapshot of UCF today is provided at https://www.ucf.edu/about-ucf/facts/
UCF is a model for higher education in the 21st century, poised to make a better future for our students and society. Focused on the next 20 years, we’re setting the course for our university and our community with a bold, new strategic plan that will transform the way we teach, learn and engage. Based on the idea that bigger is better, we are challenging long-held assumptions about the role and scope of higher education. We are multiplying the power of our scale by our constant pursuit of excellence to change the world. This means setting big goals — and working together — to achieve our collective impact. This bold vision is precisely why a growing number of companies and agencies are partnering with UCF. A summary of this strategy is found at https://www.ucf.edu/strategic-plan/files/2017/07/Creating-Our-Collective-Impact-rev072017.pdf
The College of Engineering and Computer Science has also grown to become one of the largest engineering schools in the country and has been nationally recognized for its capabilities in technology, research, innovative education and student achievement. Our graduates are highly sought after and are making a real difference in the world based on their technical skills, real world engineering focus and entrepreneurial spirit. An overview of CECS, its capabilities and areas of prominence in education and research are captured in the CECS Overview. The College has grown very quickly – over the past five years, CECS has increased enrollment by >34% and its faculty by >90%. Our growth in research and the pursuit of academic excellence are guided by the CECS Strategic plan.
More information on CECS research centers, strengths and capabilities is found on the CECS Research page https://www.cecs.ucf.edu/research/strategic-areas-and-centers/. In addition, as part of our ongoing outreach to industry, CECS hosts a weekly Virtual Seminar Series that presents faculty research activities and accomplishments in a online forum that is open to all industry partners. Links to join the seminars, along with past presentations can be found at http://www.cecs.ucf.edu/faculty-research-talks/ and represent an excellent resource for industry to quickly explore specific areas of research.
Breadth of Partnership Opportunities
CECS offers a broad range of opportunities to support Industry and Government. The range of programs is summarized in the figure below. These have been loosely broken into the three major areas of engagement:
- Research – Collaborative research opportunities range from small student projects to participation in UCF’s nationally recognized centers of excellence. These include undergraduate and student projects, visiting faculty sabbaticals, industry funded grants and contracts, Government-funded R&D programs, and technology focused consortia.
- Education and Student engagement – CECS partners* with Industry and Government sponsors to provide real world educational opportunities for students through summer employment, work experience programs, internships, and student projects. Partners can closely engage students through training sessions, tech talks, mentorship opportunities etc. They are able to establish close relationships that enhance hiring efficiency of UCF graduates.
- Sponsorships and Giving – Opportunities for supporting CECS at all levels exist through sponsorship and philanthropic giving. CECS continually seeks support to fuel our growth through the sponsorship of faculty endowments, graduate fellowships, laboratory establishment and facilitation, entrepreneurship initiatives, and our nationally recognized student-driven teams and clubs.

The Partnership Process
Finding the right resources and identifying the best methods for engaging a university as large as UCF can seem daunting. Navigating the organization to reach the right resources across engineering departments, faculty, contracts and legal, and career placement can be difficult. To simplify this process, CECS has created the Corporate Concierge to help you connect with the College of Engineering & Computer Science and UCF at large.
If it is a specific need or opportunity, we’ll identify how UCF can help, determine the proper resources, and connect you promptly for additional follow-up. In many cases, it means exploring ways that UCF can support your organization’s vision across the spectrum of talent pipeline, research and community engagement. We are here to develop a Partnership Strategy that both identifies long term objectives and creates and manages near term plans to ensure sustained progress toward those objectives.

This Playbook first describes the Partnership Process in more detail. Subsequent sections address partnering in Research, Education and Student Access, and Sponsorships and Giving. Each of these describes existing programs, provides appropriate points of contact, and includes guidance, resources, and examples to streamline setup and ensure success. These sections are also meant to act as a “quick reference guide” for partners who need direct access to resources or need support on specific issues.
